Preston Reed was born in 1955 in Armonk, New York and He starts very young to get interested in guitar.
After a short period spent studying classical guitar at age 16 "meets" the acoustic sounds of Jorma Kaukonen, the legendary guitarist of Hot Tuna and he start the path that led him to be one of the most respected and innovative acoustic guitarists contemporaries.
Start with a traditional fingerstyle technique, composing original songs inspired by the styles of Leo Kottke and John Fahey; Meanwhile begins to play live, solo and in various formations.
In 1979 he recorded his first album for the independent label Hartford and later signed his first real recording contract with MCA Records.
At the end of 1980 start to experience, looking for new techniques and a personal style. A path that sees him travel in parallel with another great innovator of that period Michael Hedges, also him searching for new expressive modalities. Hedges said about Reed "phenomenal and inspiring."
Thus was born a technique made up of harmonics, slaps, two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and that includes the use of open tunings such as BGDGAD or CGDGGD. Techniques that are now the normality, but at that period, they represented a big change in the use of the guitar.
Preston Reed has released many albums, videos and wrote some educational publications. He also composed numerous soundtracks and worked with a multitude of musicians, a transversal path that has seen him on stage and in the studio with musicians such as Linda Ronstadt, Paco de Lucia, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
